Queer women with a sweet tooth and social conscience are invited to a unique Auckland event celebrating fair trade coffee and chocolate. Organiser Jenny Rankine say the coffee break is being organised as much to provide a relaxed environment for lesbians to meet old and new friends, as it is to taste and promote fair trade goodies. "It's a good opportunity to get to know women and have conversations that don't need to be shouted over loud music," she says. Copies of lesbian and gay publications will be available, as well as posters on lesbian history loaned from the Charlotte Museum of lesbian culture. A donation of $5-$10 will cover tastings of three different fair trade coffees and chocolates as well as enjoy a range of lesbian home baking. There will also be fair trade tea and drinking chocolate for those who don't drink coffee. The event is organised by members of the monthly Sandringham lesbian brunch group and will be held at the Sandringham Community Centre, 18 Kitchener Rd, Sandringham from 2.30 to 4.30PM on Sunday 6 May. The coffee break will be one of around 10,000 held around the country between May 5 and May 20 as part of Oxfam's Fair Trade Fortnight, which raises awareness about the benefits of fair trade products to consumers. Fairtrade certified coffee and chocolate guarantees farmers a fair, stable price that covers their production costs and basic needs, and provides a premium for investing in local community development projects.
