Don’t be afraid to report crime, police urge

Rod Salt at this year's Big Gay Out Members of the glbti community are being urged to report crime, in light of estimations as much as 75 per cent of wrongdoing against us is not being passed on to the authorities. Auckland-based Diversity Liaison Officer Senior Sergeant Rod Salt is urging glbti people to get in touch and report crime, and not to assume the police of today is the same as it was 15-20 years ago. “It is not. We are here to help and not to judge,” he says. “In order for the Police to concentrate resources in a particular area (such as same sex family violence) we need to know that there is a problem in that area, we will not spend money on resources if there is no identifiable problem,” Senior Sergeant Salt explains. “I know it will be a slow process and the glbti community will need to see some more good news stories about police successes before we can hope to gain more trust but I know it is not impossible and in fact it is essential before we can stop some of the ‘invisible’ victimisation that is occurring in the community.” Read a full feature on this issue here
