Adoption reform "will be considered" - Collins

Thu 19 Apr 2012 In: New Zealand Daily News

Justice Minister Judith Collins Justice Minister Judith Collins says work on adoption law reform "will be considered alongside other pressing issues in the justice sector". “I am aware of issues around adoption law, including whether same-sex couples can jointly adopt,” she has written in a letter to Rainbow Wellington, which raised a number of issues with her earlier this year. Labour MP Jacinda Ardern’s Care of Children Law Reform Bill, which would require the Law Commission to review the outdated laws and draft a bill to replace them, has stalled because Collins’ predecessor Simon Power didn’t believe it was a high priority. The Greens are in favour of a cross-party approach to the issue. Rainbow Wellington says overall Collins’ response “says the usual things, and takes us no further forward, but clarifies what we expected”.Collins also says the government has no plans to introduce legal same-sex marriage, as opposed to Civil Unions, int eh current Parliamentary term.
