The Los Angeles Police Department has announced it will open a jail for transgender detainees, because they have been targets of violence in men’s lock-up. "This is a major change," jail division commander Captain Dave Lindsay has told the LA Times. “It will allow for ‘an environment that's safe and secure, as there's been a history of violence against transgender people’." The city’s jails are used to hold people until they appear in court for the first time, which is usually for a maximum of three days. Police are also promising to train staff to refer to transgender people in custody by the name and gender they prefer.
