A gay American man believes liking a Facebook page supporting gay adoption led to workplace harassment, discrimination, and eventually his sacking. Peter TerVeer has filed a complaint with the Library of Congress’ Equal Employment Opportunity Complaints Office, alleging his former supervisor discriminated against him because he is gay. TerVeer says the pair was friends and the supervisor tried to set him up with his daughter, with whom he became Facebook friends. He says when he liked a page on Facebook called ‘Two Dads’ the man’s daughter unfriended him with the message “you’re not one of those weirdos, are you?” The supervisor then allegedly sent him an email with the subject, “Diversity — Let’s Celebrate It,” alongside an image of assault rifles. TerVeer says he was later confronted about his sexual preference, with his supervisor wanting to educate him about hell and telling him it was a sin to be gay. He was ultimately fired for missing 37 consecutive working days, while on disability leave he says was signed-off by his supervisor. TerVeer says he suffered severe anxiety disorder due to the hostile work environment.
