9.35PM: Cheers and hugs greet NZ's Mr Gay World

Wed 11 Apr 2012 In: New Zealand Daily News

Andreas Derleth and partner Tom Linn head through the arrivals area 9.35PM: Cheers, hugs and kisses have greeted Mr Gay World Andreas Derleth as he passed through the arrivals area at Auckland International Airport. Derleth emerged from the customs and immigration area holding his cup and looking happy but tired, very tanned and "really buff" in the words of one of those gathered to welcome him home. He was first greeted by his long-term partner Tom Linn with a lingering hug and a kiss and the pair disappeared briefly behind a large pillar for a private moment. Derleth then emerged to acknowledge those who had gathered with banners and signs. His arrival caused quite a stir amongst people waiting for other passengers from the flight. Mr Gay New Zealand Andreas Derleth with his Mr Gay World trophy Derleth says he was very excited to see the welcoming group and paid tribute to his partner who he says has been "a huge support" throughout the process of winning the Mr Gay New Zealand title and the preparations for Mr Gay World. He also acknowledged the pair's "amazing friends." His collection of four trophies, the main Mr Gay World cup and three for sectional wins, had caused him to incur extra baggage fees but this did not seem to worry him at all. As part of his prize package Derleth has won $25,000 of international travel to five continents but his partner is unsure how much he will be able to accompany Derleth on the trips. Linn is, however, determined to be with Derleth on a trip to South Africa, a country he has not visited before. As the couple head home Derleth says he feels tired but doubts he will sleep due to the time difference between New Zealand and South Africa.
