GABA brings Auckland Lesbian Ball back

Fri 30 Mar 2012 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback View at NDHA

Auckland’s Lesbian Ball has been revived thanks to the help of the Gay Auckland Business Association’s Charitable Trust. The group which ran the event for many years LESO last year decided the organisation had served its purpose, and it was time to call it a day. It expressed hope someone would take up the challenge of producing events like the Ball in the future. A team has now been gathered to bring the Ball back after a two year absence, which has only been possible because the GABA Charitable Trust has agreed to support it. Any profits from the 2012 Ball will be returned to the Trust and distributed to women-oriented projects under the Trust’s Community Grants programme. The return of the Lesbian Ball will come with a ‘Butch and Burlesque’ theme, and will be held on Saturday 7 July at Hotel Pullman Auckland. “It’s going to be a fantastic revival of a well-loved event and ‘night of the year’ for women,” says Gaba Charitable Trust spokesperson Karen Knight. “We’ve got an energetic team on the project, a steamy theme and stunning entertainment lined up. I’m confident we’ll sell out as we know women have missed what was an annual event.” The Lesbian Ball is open to all women and those wanting a weekend away can take advantage of generous room rates on offer from venue partner, Pullman Auckland. Popular covers band, The Mermaids will cover all music tastes throughout the night. Tickets are $80 including entertainment and supper, are available online from 12 April at gaba.org.nz or can be purchased for cash at The Women’s Bookshop. This year’s sponsors include GABA Charitable Trust, Hotel Pullman Auckland and First Scene Productions. For more information visit gaba.org.nz or email ball@gaba.org.nz
