Cottrell murder-accused to stay behind bars

Phil Cottrell A teenager charged with the murder of gay Wellington journalist Phil Cottrell will remain behind bars, after giving up on his application for electronic bail. Cottrell died in hospital on December 11, a day after being bashed in central Wellington as he walked home from an overnight shift at Radio New Zealand. Nicho Waipuka, 19, is one of two teenagers charged with Cottrell’s murder. Fairfax reports his lawyer has abandoned an application for electronic bail as a suitable address could not be found for him. Waipuka has been remanded in custody until May. His co-accused, 18-year-old Manuel Robinson, is due in court tomorrow.
