Nepal announces glbt sports tournament

  Sunil Babu Pant Nepal has announced it will run a gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender sports tournament, a two-week event which will be the first of its kind in Asia. The September event will be hosted by glbt rights group The Blue Diamond Society in Kathmandu and feature tennis, track and field, volleyball, football and martial arts. "Renowned and respected Nepali athletes will support as coaches and referees for the program," says organiser and gay MP Sunil Babu Pant, who visited the AsiaPacific Outgames in Wellington last year. The AsiaPacific Outgames has only been held in New Zealand and Australia and Nepal is bidding to host the event in the future. "The aims for organizing the Blue Diamond National Sport Competition 2012 are to mainstream LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people) into the larger society, promote healthy lifestyles, encourage physical fitness, and promote health mentally and spiritually," Pant says.
