Henderson’s Falls Park is being readied for this afternoon’s annual Auckland lesbian gathering, Heroes Out West. Marquees and a rotunda are being set up, transforming the park into an intimate outdoor space with tables and chairs where attendees can enjoy a picnic and a drink. People are welcome to BYO, but there will also be a small cash bar and food stall. “The flashest picnic in the park started with the desire for lesbians to be visible and at home in West Auckland, and it’s grown into an integral part of the Summer calendar,” organisers say. There will be plenty of entertainment for the fifth incarnation of Heroes Out West. Musical director Edwina Thorne is promising new and energetic acts, with a fun and funky atmosphere. New talent includes Paula Barnett from Wellington and The Girlz Dance Band, an all-women’s band from South Auckland. Favourites The Muse and Jodi Pringle, Anne Spier and Edwina herself will also perform. There will also be an open mic session. There will be limited $25 tickets on sale at the venue this afternoon. The event starts at 4PM.
