We asked you to vote on your favourite Melissa Etheridge song, and now we present your top five for you to enjoy ahead of her concerts in Auckland and Wellington in July: 1. Bring Me Some Water, 1988, Melissa Etheridge This ragey rock song was Melissa’s debut single way back in 1988. It’s about her current girlfriend who was living away from her when they decided to have an open relationship. The lyrics are about her jealousy at the thought of her girlfriend being with someone else: “Somebody bring me some water, can't you see I'm burning alive”. Etheridge says the song is the most recognised at her concerts, where everyone knows it after just the first few seconds of the intro. Watch the video below 2. Come to My Window, 1993, Yes I Am The first song to be released after Etheridge came out to the world, Come to My Window nabbed the musician a Grammy. The love song is full of allusions to being a lesbian and gay rights, it gained massive airplay through call-in requests to radio stations. "I don't care what they think. I don't care what they say. What do they know about this love, anyway?" she sings. The black and white music video features actress and musician Juliette Lewis. Watch it here 3. Like The Way I Do, 1998, Melissa Etheridge This song is another dealing with a non-monogamous relationship. In the lyrics she asks her lover, who had told her that she had a crush on someone else, what she sees in the other person and what that person is giving to her what she herself can't: "Tell me does she love you like the way I love you, does she stimulate you, attract and captivate you?". Etheridge says in her autobiography it’s one of her best songs. “It is filled with passion and agony and desire and utter gut-wrenching pain." Apparently when playing live Etheridge makes this song last 15 to 20 minutes! Watch a live performance here 4. I Want To Come Over, 1995, Your Little Secret The title of this album says it all really, and this single places Etheridge in the role of a secret lover: “I know you're alone. I watched the car leave. Your lover is gone. Let me in … I want to come over. To hell with the consequence. You told me you loved me. That's all I believe.” It reached 22 on the Us Billboard Hot 20 and was the highest charting single from the album. Gwyneth Paltrow features in the music video, which you can watch here 5. You Can Sleep While I Drive, 1989, Brave and Crazy A slow burner, it’s the perfect mellow driving track for any couples making a road trip to her concert, the song is about getting out of the a city and making a new start: “You know I've seen it before. This mist that covers your eyes. You've been looking for something. That's not in your life. My intentions are true. Won't you take me with you.
