Aussie MP faces backlash over 'vile' ad

Bob Katter An Australian independent MP has reportedly been offered police protection following outrage over a “homophobic” and “vile” anti-gay marriage ad. Australia Party leader Bob Katter has targeted at Queensland Liberal National Party leader Campbell Newman in the ad, which you can watch below. His party launched the campaign on Sunday in an attempt to label Newman a hypocrite for his apparent support for same-sex marriage. Katter has told the Sydney Morning Herald that although he and his party's candidates had been offered police protection after a spate of threatening and abusive phone calls were received in response to the ad, he would not remove the campaign has said it won't remove the ads. Equal rights campaigner Phil Browne lodged a complaint yesterday with the Advertising Standards Bureau, labelling the ad as ''vile''. ''The ad uses fear and hate to target homosexuals, an oppressed minority group,'' Browne said in his complaint. ''This is vile and unacceptable.'' Opposition frontbencher Malcolm Turnbull has told ABC the ad’s “a shocker”. ''It is homophobic. It's designed to do Anna Bligh's work in undermining Campbell Newman.'' Meanwhile the ABC Radio host who voiced the ad has been sidelined, as she did not have permission to do external work.
