Mike Puru Gay radio jock Mike Puru has revealed he may suffer from internalised homophobia, and explained why he invited Prime Minister John Key, who voted against civil unions, to his engagement party. The Edge host confirmed what was widely known when he came out on air in 2010. In an odd Michelle Hewitson Weekend Herald back page profile he’s now spoken about how he may indeed be a “homophobic homo”, as a co-host has suggested to him. He explains he doesn't enjoy the camp stereotype and he doesn't want to be judged as gay. “What it means in practice is that he won't hold Regan's hand or show him any affection in public,” Hewitson explains. “He also refuses to walk their two dogs around their Remuera neighbourhood because he doesn't want people to say: Look at those gay guys with those gay dogs. What sort of dogs are they? ‘One is a Sydney silky crossed with a Maltese terrier. You couldn't get a gayer dog!'” the article says. Upon inviting Prime Minister John Key to a party to celebrate his engagement to his partner Regan Wallis, the article hints that Puru was just being cheeky, adding that Key stole his thunder when he actually turned up with his wife Bronagh. Puru, a lifetime Labour voter, now votes National. Key’s attendance at the party is something the Prime Minister now pulls out when asked about his position on civil unions.
