Mon 30 Jan 2012 In: International News View at Wayback

Ban Ki-Moon UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has urged African countries to respect gay and transgender rights, saying “discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity as one of the injustices that has been ignored or even sanctioned by many States for too long”. He’s told African leaders gathered in Ethiopia foe the annual Summit of the African Union that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is a promise to all people in all places at all times. Ban says the some governments are treating people as second-class citizens, or even criminals. “Confronting this discrimination is a challenge. But we must live up to the ideals of the Universal Declaration,” he told the summit.
