Odd Future's claws come out in gay cats shirt

Thu 19 Jan 2012 In: New Zealand Daily News

7PM: The shock-driven group banned from the Big Gay Out after complaints about its lyrics has released a t-shirt with a picture of two tomcats having sex. Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All is playing at Auckland's Powerstation tonight. The solo gig is due to their invite to the Big Day Out being revoked because of complaints about the perceived homophobia and constant use of the word faggot in their lyrics. The complaints were heard by Auckland Council, which owns Big Day Out venue Mt Smart Stadium, and Odd Future was cut from the Big Day Out line-up. Fans, gay and straight, have defended the group by claiming the lyrics are simply fantasy and not meant to be taken literally. A limited edition t-shirt Odd Future has now released, apparently to mark the ban, shows a ginger cat mounting a screeching tabby, with the slogan "two dudes" below it. On the back it reads "Big Gay Out". The t-shirts were designed by the group's frontman Tyler The Creator, who responded with "New Zealand does not like a nigga," in response to the Big Day Out dropping his act. He has maintained he is not homophobic, saying he uses the word faggot because it "hits and hurts people". It's unclear whether Tyler know there is actually an Auckland event called the Big Gay Out, but bloggers seem to think the t-shirt is a message of distaste towards the Big Day Out. The final Auckland Big Day Out is being held tomorrow, with promoters pulling the plug amidst revelations it has lost money for 18 years. The Australian Big Day Outs are not under threat.
