David Shearer Labour's new leader is in favour of same-sex marriage and gay couples being given the right to adopt. David Shearer has told the New Zealand Herald he has "no issue" with the two policies, and acknowledged that updating adoption laws, which the Government has said is not a priority, is long overdue. He says he would have to see the detail of any bill to legalise gay marriage or same-sex adoption before voting for them but supported them in principle. Shearer's deputy is openly-gay Wellington Central MP Grant Robertson, who is part of a four-MP Rainbow Caucus within Labour alongside Maryan Street, Charles Chauvel and Louisa Wall.
