Grant Robertson Gay Labour MP Grant Robertson has announced he is officially seeking to become deputy head of the party under leadership contender David Shearer, as Labour heads into its first leadership meeting for members tonight. "After much thought and discussion I have decided to seek the Deputy Leadership," Robertson has stated on Facebook, the forum he has chiefly chosen to discuss his bid since the election, rather than talking through the media. "I believe that this is best role I can play in Labour winning the 2014 election," he continues. "I am supporting David Shearer for the leadership, and I believe my skills and experience will complement him, and together we can be a fresh and exciting leadership team. Thanks to everyone for their support and advice, and I look forward to the rest of the week!" Robertson was initially running bidding for the deputy role under another Labour MP David Parker, who has since withdrawn from the race, leaving just Shearer and the third David, David Cunliffe, in contention. Votes for leader and deputy are separate and decided by Labour's caucus. Cunliffe has made it clear he wants Nanaia Mahuta has his deputy if he is selected.
