Oscars producer and star resign over anti-gay slur

Murphy and Ratner An anti-gay slur has led to the resignation of the producer and the presenter of next year's Academy Awards show. At a function to promote his latest movie, Tower Heist, starring amongst others Eddie Murphy, producer Brett Ratner, 42, said that in preparation for filming "rehearsals are for fags." At first the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said Ratner would continue as Oscars producer after he apologised publicly and called his comments "ugly and bigioted," but it has now accepted his resignation. Actor Murphy, who has long included anti-gay slurs in his stand-up comedy routines, has also resigned as presenter of the awards.
