Auckland University's students association will have a Queer Rights Officer after a successful petition resulted in a resounding yes vote this week. After just failing to get enough people on their first attempt, those rallying for the change managed to get more than 200 people in the university quad for the vote at a Special General Meeting. They more than made the necessary two-thirds support, with Auckland University Students' Association Women's Rights Officer Alana Chang reporting not a single person spoke against the motion. "And the roar of agreement was absolutely glorious. It was really great," she says. Chang says the no matter what the Government does with legislation like the voluntary student membership law, students around the country have simply decided that they are tired of waiting for other people to fix things. "There were a lot of tertiary students in the LegaliseLove rally. We grew up being promised equality and a bright and rosy future and while things have improved, they haven't improved enough. We want that equality and dignity that we were promised and we want it now."
