Sophie and Sian kiss two weeks ago The airing of an intimate kiss between two of Coronation Street's characters in the first episode to screen at a new timeslot was purely coincidental, a spokesperson for TVNZ says. The epic evening soap, which has amassed a huge following over the decades, has been controversially rescheduled by TV One to appear in shorter episodes spread across the entire week at 5.30pm. In last night's episode religious schoolgirl Sophie Webster kissed Sian Powers. The characters have been seen to kiss before, but in the later 7.30pm time-slot. An unspecified number of viewers called the channel last evening to protest. A spokesperson for TVNZ says the their programmers do not discriminate on the basis of sexuality. "A kiss is a kiss, whether it's between a same-sex couple or a man and a woman." The airing of the kiss in the first episode at 5.30pm was "just by chance." Some fans of the programme have expressed concern that the earlier timeslot will see some of the show's racier plotlines and content diminshed or edited out completely. GayNZ.com's Television listings compiler notes that in a future episode, already screened in the UK, the lesbian pair are seen in a bath together.
