Wed 19 Oct 2011 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback View at NDHA

Denis Philli(left) and Willie Ahsee (right) 6.30PM: Seventeen-year-old Willie Ahsee has been found guilty of the manslaughter of gay temporary-sworn police officer Denis Phillips, and not guilty of his murder. The 11-member jury has returned the verdict after four hours deliberation at the High Court in Auckland. The Crown claimed Ahsee murdered 59-year-old Phillips in his Papakura home on 30 July last year, however the defence put forward cases for both accidental death and self-defence. Both agreed the teenager fatally stabbed Phillips in the head with a steak knife, severing his vertebral artery. Ahsee has been remanded for sentencing on 15 December. Justice Asher has remanded him into CYF custody.
