US armed forces to allow gay mag on bases

Sun 4 Sep 2011 In: International News View at Wayback

The day 'don't ask, don't tell' is officially wiped in America, queer members of the armed forces will be able to read their first-ever gay-themed magazine at Army and Air Force bases. OutServe Magazine says it will deliver a special "repeal issue" on 20 September, which is when the ban on openly gay service members is due to officially end. The upcoming edition will feature photos and biographies of nearly 100 service members who will be openly acknowledging their sexual orientation, the magazine says on its website. "This marks an incredible time in the history of our military. Gay, lesbian, and bisexual servicemembers once had to conceal their true identities," says an OutServe co-director. "By featuring their pictures and their stories, we are signalling that time has passed. It is time for these military members to be honoured for their extraordinary commitment and sacrifice in defence of our country.”
