Ghana: Homosexuality 'not a human rights issue'

Wed 24 Aug 2011 In: International News View at Wayback

Lauretta Lamptey The new head of Ghana's Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice says she doesn't think homosexuality should be legal, and claims it's a criminal law issue not a human rights issue. "The debate has been about rights and the real issue is the legal side of things. There is [something illogical] in arguing for increased rights of homosexuals and at the same time saying that by law homosexuality is a criminal offence," Lauretta Lamptey stated in a radio interview. It contradicts her former support for decriminalisation, something she now denies ever backing. Sex between men is illegal in the West African nation, and its constitution guarantees the protection of all human right for Ghanaian citizens "whatever his race, place of origin, political opinion, colour, religion, creed or gender", but does not mention sexuality. On July this year the Western Region Minister Paul Evans Aidoo called for all gay men to be rounded up and arrested, and for landlords and tenants to inform on people they suspected of being gay.
