US: Starbucks boss cans church speech

Mon 15 Aug 2011 In: International News View at Wayback

Starbucks founder and CEO Howard Schultz has cancelled a planned speech at a church which has previously supported gay conversion therapy. Starbucks denies the change of plan is connected to a Change.org petition launched last week asking Schultz to denounce the Willow Creek Association's connection to the "ex-gay" group Exodus International. However Starbucks has stated it has "zero tolerance" for any kind of discrimination. A spokeswoman for Willow Creek has told The Chicago Tribune that Willow Creek's views on homosexuality had evolved. It now believes being gay is not a choice but says scripture calls for gay men and lesbian women to be celibate.
