Mrs Tamaki believes lesbians 'hurt by men'

Mon 1 Aug 2011 In: New Zealand Daily News

The first lady of Destiny Church Hannah Tamaki says there's nothing wrong with women who love women: except that their sexuality comes down to being badly treated by men. The wife of Destiny Church leader Brian Tamaki has been on a PR campaign following the fallout over her bid to become President of the Maori Women's Welfare League, particularly among lesbian members of the body. Among the interviews she's carried out are with the Weekend Herald's often bitingly-sharp profile writer Michele Hewitson, who grilled Tamaki about her view on lesbianism. "This was a very convoluted conversation which involved me insisting that she thought that being a lesbian was wrong and her insisting she had no problem with lesbians and that some of her best friends and family were lesbians," Hewitson writes. Tamaki puts forward that she understands that if there are lesbians in the church, they have chosen to no longer be lesbians. "Of course she doesn't really approve of lesbians because the Bible says homosexuality is wrong, but she can get on with anyone and loves everyone and she wishes the league lesbians had come and talked to her. I can see why they didn't: She'd probably have won them over," the Herald writer continues. (Although perhaps not. She has the strange, though undoubtedly not unique idea that lesbians are lesbians because they've been hurt by men, and so understands how they could "be turned off" by men.)" You can read the full profile, where Tamaki also discusses her relationship with her husband, giggles a lot, flashes about a $90,000 ring and tries to match-make the writer here
