No hand-holding at Gertrude Stein exhibition

Thu 21 Jul 2011 In: International News

Gertrude Stein was a lesbian writer, poet and art collector In a case of extreme irony, a lesbian couple has been told to stop holding hands at an exhibition celebrating the life of Gertrude Stein, in San Francisco. Eyewitness Jane Levikow has told the San Francisco Chronicle the young women were told by a security guard at the Contemporary Jewish Museum that they were not allowed to hold hands in the building. She says the couple demanded to see someone in charge at the museum and a small crowd began to gather around them as they continued to argue with the guard. "The idea that in 2011, in San Francisco, at the Jewish Museum, this guard could be that out of touch was shocking," Levikow said. A museum spokesperson has confirmed to NBC that the incident took place and that the couple were given a verbal apology from the head of security. The woman said the museum has asked that the guard, who was employed by a private security company, be reprimanded and insisted that the museum has long supported lgbt issues.
