Capital schools lack books on gay parenting

Fri 8 Jul 2011 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

A Victoria University researcher says Wellington schools are reinforcing the image of traditional families by not stocking books about gay parents. More than 85 per cent of school libraries surveyed in the capital did not have any books showing gay parents, school of educational psychology and pedagogy senior lecturer Ann Hardie has told the Dominion Post. She surveyed 58 primary schools in Wellington and Porirua to see if they had any of 11 popular children's books that in some way include gay or lesbian parents. Eight schools had one – none of them had other books with gay parents. Hardie said it was often unconscious and inadvertent and schools were surprised at the results. "I think they confidently thought they would, of course, have some of these books." You can read the full story here
