Queer university students will gather in Hamilton this weekend with the issues of voluntary student membership nagging at the front of their minds. Labour has been successful in filibustering in Parliament so ACT MP Heather Roy's Education (Freedom of Association) Amendment Bill has not had its third reading, and it may not be passed this term. However if this is the case, it could still be passed after the election. The Bill would make membership of tertiary student associations voluntary, something which has greatly concerned queer student associations around the country who say it would put their future funding, and ultimately their existence, in jeopardy. Askew Waikato is hosting the annual UniQ Aotearoa conference this weekend, where the VSM bill will be one of the topics up for discussion. "It's a big threat," says Askew President Liana Tere. "We would be lacking finances and support ... it would be hard for a lot of our clubs," she says. Transgender issues, safe sex and identity are among other topics that will be discussed at the gathering, which begins on Friday with a welcome and casual icebreaker, followed by a quiet movie night. "Saturday is going to be full on," says Tere. "We have a full day of workshops, talks and visits from politicians ... and we also have our AGM that day." Tere says the conference is not just about education and networking, but also about having fun.
