Snapshot of life with HIV to be shared

Tue 5 Jul 2011 In: New Zealand Daily News

Research using photography to give an insight into the lives of gay Auckland men who live with HIV will be shared in the next edition of a New Zealand AIDS Foundation's seminar series tonight. Policy Analyst Dr Jason Myers will be sharing his multimethod PhD research at the Insights series. The Auckland University graduate who joined the NZAF last September has completed a Research Fellowship at University College London, presented his research at many international conferences and published in a number of academic journals and edited books. In a presentation for at the NZAF National Office in Ponsonby, Dr Myers will outline Photovoice as a method and present photographs and stories shared by the participants in his research. Photovoice combines photography with grassroots social action, and participants are asked to represent their community or point of view by taking photographs, discussing them together, developing narratives to go with their photos, and conducting outreach or other action. Dr Meyers used the method to map the different ways in which gay men who are living with HIV renegotiate various spaces in their lives, offering insight into the often marginalised experiences of gay men living with HIV. Dr Jason Myers' presentation will run from 6.00 –7.30pm tonight at the NZAF National Office, in Meeting Room 2, Floor 2, 31 Hargreaves Street, St Mary’s Bay, Auckland. On-street parking is available near the NZAF building.
