Changes to Family will double venue's size

Sat 25 Jun 2011 In: New Zealand Daily News

The old Rock 'N' Bull has all but gone Big changes are underway at Karangahape Road's gay venues, including the expansion of Family bar into neighbouring premises. Family, long the anchor of Auckland's glbt scene, is to incorporate the space next door previously run as the Rock 'N' Bull. Work has just started on upgrading the new area and linking the two areas by creating an internal doorway and refurbishing the space Owner Wayne Clark says the extra space now available means Family can undertake much-needed alteration and expansion. The Family dance floor will remain in the same place but the gaming machines at the steetfront will be brought further inside opposite the existing bar. The outdoor smoking area is to be expanded to incorporate the old gaming area. Through the new linking door into the new space a second long bar area is being provided which will almost double the size of Family. A VIP area is under consideration. The bar and food service area of what used to be the Rock 'N' Bull is being divided off to form a entirely separate cafe. Whilst Clark will own the cafe it will be managed separately and he is hopeful it will have a late night food emphasis. Meanwhile, down the road Kamo bar and cafe is to close with a bang next weekend then it will be the domain of workmen for several weeks as its new owners undertake extensive rennovations. It will remain a gay-focussed venue. You can discuss this New Zealand gay community news story in the GayNZ.com Forum
