Three gay couples are to dine with Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard, after a campaign group was the winning bidder for the dinner at a charity auction. GetUp made the succeful AU$31,000 bid at the Canberra Press Gallery Midwinter Ball. GetUp's national director, Simon Sheikh, says the six dinner guests will be couples in same-sex relationships ''to make the case for marriage equality''. The first couple chosen is Sydney lesbians Sandy Miller and Louise Bucke, who are engaged and have two children from Miller's previous marriage. The couple, who live in Maroubra, have told the Sydney Morning Herald they talk about their wedding every day - about walking down the aisle, about the dresses they'd like to wear. ''I've been to so many of my friends' weddings and I'm so happy for them,'' Ms Miller said. ''But I'm so often saddened by the fact we're so in love, we're so committed, wouldn't it be great for us to be able to get married in front of our friends and for my children to be able to see it happen?''
