Marchers queer the Wellington night

Hundreds of people have marched against homophobia and transphobia in central Wellington, taking a stand against physical and verbal abuse handed out on the streets. The march went from Waitangi Park to Cuba St where speeches and performances were held in the middle of Cuba Mall. From groups of friends, to entire families, those who attended say it was empowering and inspiring to see the glbt community rally together. The organisers have expressed their thanks, saying "your strength and courage was an inspiration. Let's not forget that this is just the beginning. We've seen how strong we are together; now let's put an end to transphobia and homophobia for good." A public meeting is to be held next week so supporters can contribute on how to tackle prejudice.
