Most Aussies believe gay marriage will happen

Wed 8 Jun 2011 In: International News View at Wayback

A new poll shows three in four Australians believes same-sex marriage will happen. The survey from Galaxy research was commissioned by Australian Marriage Equality, and Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays. It shows 75 per cent of Australians believe same-sex marriages will inevitably be allowed, prompting marriage equality advocates to urge political leaders to take action. It comes as a TV ad campaign has been launched featuring the proud mum of a gay son, saying, “Australia is ready for equality for our gay and lesbian children, so it’s now time for political leaders to act”. She is decorating her son's wedding cake and says, “I’m ready and so is the cake ... so please Julia, allow my son the emotional security and instant respect that comes from marriage”. Australian Marriage Equality National Convener Alex Greenwich says the ad reinforces the message that Australians want action on marriage equality. “The majority of Australians who support full legal equality for same-sex couples will take heart from the poll revealed this morning, because it shows the tide of history is running towards equality and nothing can turn it back."
