Musician Jodi Pringle is a regular Dykes on Mics performer Auckland's Dyke on Mics will tonight celebrate a year of bringing a diverse range of women to the stage. The event where anyone can get up and share their talents, whether it be through music, poetry, comedy, or anything under the sun really. That's the ethic organiser Cissy Rock has pushed right from the start, when she semi-jokingly spread the word she was looking for everything from musicians to a lesbian mime artist. The event began at the now closed Candy Bar and has moved down Karangahape Rd to a new home at Kamo. Reflecting on a year of Dykes on Mics, Rock says the best thing is standing on stage looking out at the sea of lesbians. "That it's stillgoing after a year shows that lesbians want to celebrate who they are in their own space," she says. "Nothing is quite as special as a whole room laughing at a lesbian joke," she adds. Dykes on Mics begins at 7pm tonight, after which Kamo will launch into a throwback Queens Birthday Sunday with DJ Wanda spinning the tunes in a return of the legendary Retro night.
