Queen's Birthday Weekend will be as camp as ever, as we celebrate what some people affectionately see as a queer national holiday weekend of sorts. Here's a guide to what's happening around the country! Out Takes If you're in Auckland or Wellington checking out a film or two at the Out Takes film fest is an absolute must-do. The breadth of films on offer is wide and there is bound to be something for all tastes. If you are in Wellington be sure to book in and see GayNZ.com reviewers' favourites so far Stonewall Uprising on Sunday at 4.30pm and We Were Here on Monday at 12.30pm.Full schedule at www.outtakes.org.nz Kazam! This weekend 200 young people from all over the country will gather for a weekend full of both frivolous fun and serious planning in Auckland's western reaches. The Rainbow Youth organised hui is designed to help with networking and empowerment among our queer youth and there have been fundraisers all over the country to make it happen. Kazam! Rising up in Christchurch Three months on from the horrific earthquake, members of Christchurch's queer community have decided it's time for a party to help raise spirits and bring people together. UpRising is being held at the Pegasus Arms on Sunday. It will raise funds for queer youth group Q-Topia, which has now found a home at Family Planning after two subsequent venues were damaged significantly in the September and February earthquakes. Doors open at 10pm and tickets are $10. Drag, strippers and a drag battle K' Rd's Family always has plenty on offer over Queen's Birthday Weekend and this weekend is no different. On Friday night it will host Drag for Dollars, on Saturday night there will be hot male strippers and on Sunday there will be the ultimate battle for dominance, Queen of Queens. There will also be the bar's regular DJs keeping the dance floor pumping. We do love a pageant While Auckland will crown its new queen, Wellington will search for its new prince at Mr Gay Wellington 2011. Steve Gray will be the MC for the legendary event, which has been running since the Pound Nightclub days back in the 90s. Over $1000 worth of prizes is on offer for the winner this year, who will have to overcome tough rounds of swimwear, eveningwear and a new talent section. Doors open in the Garden Club @8pm. Door sales $12 – but punters are advised to arrive early to avoid disappointment. Get your kit off On Sunday night Auckland men's bar Urge will host another of its furry-favourite Underware parties. This is an event which always sells out so get your $10 tickets from the bar, or email urgebar@ihug.co.nz if you are from out of town. Clothing isn't optional, and your best underwear is mandatory!
