Urzila Carlson on the hunt for yellow towel

Sat 21 May 2011 In: New Zealand Daily News

After a successful run of New Zealand International Comedy Festival shows, comedian Urzila Carlson is warmed up for the biggest night of her comedy life so far. The self-described 'lesbitarian' is in the running for the coveted Billy T Award, which will be handed out at Last Laugh at Sky City Theatre on Sunday night. The event is the awards ceremony for the festival, which also has awards like Best International Show, Best Local Show and Spirit of the Festival. The yellow towel for the Billy T winner has become symbolic of the incredible growth of kiwi comedy, with previous winners having moved from the comedy circuit to the entertainment world. Carlson, who told GayNZ.com being nominated was "a bit of an unexpected mindfuck", is up against Palmerston North's Nick Gibb, 'alternative' comedian Joseph Harper, 'ladies' favourite' Nick Rado and Wellington's Cameron Murray. The event will be hosted by Michele A'Court.
