Girls' weekend

Fri 20 May 2011 In: Events View at Wayback

It's a good weekend to be a lesbian or bi girl in Auckland. Friday and Saturday are full of events for women who love women! So leave the tea and biscuits at home and get out! Proud Mary The DL: This bi-monthly event offers something to cater for the more alternative women out there. Run by scene maven Katija Vlatkovich, each Proud Mary brings the crème de la crème of the most exciting alternative live acts to the stage. This time the amazing Maori/German/Samoan rapper Coco Solid will be the major pull, fresh after being signed on a German label with her pumping foray into disco rap. You probably want to check her out before she invades Europe ... oh and there's also Auckland's best alternative DJs (IMHO) Quay St Social Club, PLUS The Larnach Monster AND The Phoon-Tang Clan. If you like your music outside the norm and your ladies ... well ... if you just like your ladies, don't miss Proud Mary at 4:20. Proud Mary's Autumn Adventure, 4:20 K' Rd, 20th May, from 10pm, $10. Miss Phloss at Kamo The DL: If you feel like chilling out with a cocktail and a show for a bit before or during Proud Mary, pop across the road to Kamo for a sit down. There is a great couch, great bowls of chips and for those who are not so accustomed to going out, you can probably wrangle a coffee. Aside from the hot female bartender (riaow) there will also be a burlesque show from the saucy local favourite Miss Phloss (double riaow) and tunes from the funkadelic DJ Vitamin K. Funked Up Fridays at Kamo, 382 K' Rd, 20th May, all night, no cover. Flirt Uniform Party The DL: As other lesbian ventures have stumbled and tumbled time and time again, Flirt is back and drawing women out of their closets. It's always been the best place to meet your new love or just hook up, and with the onset of cold weather goodness knows we all need someone to snuggle! Flirt offers a mix of the best pop and hip hop, a place to dance and lots of regulars who are generally pretty happy to help welcome newbies onto the scene. This time around its a uniform party, so get into your party clothes and get there! Flirt at Family Downunder, 270 K' Rd, 21st May, from 10pm, $5. Urzila Carlson The DL: This South Africa raised 'lesbitarian' is a crack-up and if you haven't seen her new Comedy Festival show The Truth According to Urzila Carlson it's time to get along. Her final shows are Friday and Saturday night, after which she will go up against the best of the best emerging comedians at Last Laugh, which will feature the Billy T Award finalists. The Truth According To Urzila Carlson, The Basement Upstairs, until 21st May, 7.15pm, $20. Jacqui Stanford - 20th May 2011
