Researcher delves into treatment of HIV+ men

Thu 19 May 2011 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

A Waikato University Masters student is hoping to uncover the experiences of HIV positive men who may have previously been silenced. Cheryl Ware is investigating a history of the social treatment of, and behaviour towards gay men in the Central North Island who were diagnosed between 1983 and 1997. She understands that for some this topic may be difficult to talk about. "I will offer the men anonymity if they desire, in the form of a pseudonym, and I will ensure any information I use in my research will not reveal their identity, if they choose anonymity," she says. Ware has submitted an application to the ethics committee and says her entire research will be conducted in an ethically conscious manner. "I am very passionate about my research, and I have enormous respect for all individuals who are battling the virus," she says. Cheryl Ware can be contacted at caw25@waikato.ac.nz
