Police being 'thorough' with Hughes inquiry

Tue 17 May 2011 In: New Zealand Daily News

Darren Hughes resigned from Parliament after the complaint was laid Weeks after a complaint was laid, police are still investigating the allegations against former Labour MP Darren Hughes. The complaint relates to a post-debate night out with an 18-year-old and other university students, where the man ended up running naked from the home Mr Hughes shares with Labour Deputy Leader Annette King. Police say they are conducting a thorough inquiry. Labour leader Phil Goff has told Newstalk ZB he has not spoken to Mr Hughes, who resigned from Parliament following the revelations, in the past week. "It's in the hands of the police. I have made it clear from the start that it's not my intention to comment on or interfere with the police process. But I do hope that we get an early-ish resolution of that." One Labour MP has told the NZ Herald there is some frustration at the length of time the investigation was taking. "It's unfair on them both, but particularly on Darren, because his life's on hold."
