Hate crime charges laid in Clementi case

Thu 21 Apr 2011 In: International News

Tyler Clementi took his own life after being filmed having sex A Rutgers University student who allegedly used a webcam to spy on two men having sex is facing hate crime charges, in a case which brought a huge level of attention to gay suicides. One of the men who filmed, 18-year-old Tyler Clementi, took his own life just days after he was caught on film. The violinist was in his first weeks at the university. Nineteen-year-old Dharun Ravi is facing 15 counts stemming from the September 2010 incident, including invasion of privacy, evidence tampering and witness tampering. He was Clementi's roommate. The summons accuses Ravi of targeting Clementi because of his sexual orientation. Clamenti's family said in a statement the summons "spells out cold and calculated acts against our son Tyler by his college roommate. ... We are eager to have the process move forward for justice in this case and to reinforce the standards of acceptable conduct in our society." Prosecutors say Ravi "attempted to mislead investigators and witnesses in various ways" during the investigation, including deleting a tweet telling followers to watch Clementi online and allegedly trying to convince witnesses not to testify against him.
