Volunteers muck in at Mangawhai Heads

Sun 10 Apr 2011 In: New Zealand Daily News View at NDHA

A crew of volunteers has chipped in and spent a day helping get the property of an arson-hit lesbian couple back in order. ANZ staff and GABA members led the charge, with the bank using its volunteer day to spend time in the yard of Lindsay Curnow and Juliet Leigh, whose packing shed was destroyed in a suspicious fire in January, destroying the base of their popular mail order business Blooming Bulbs. A number of other volunteers who travelled up from Auckland on Saturday to help out at the Northland home. An entire fence was rebuilt and repainted, the framework was put up for a shed and the foundation was laid for a water tank, which was then put in place. One volunteer has told GayNZ.com Daily News it was hard work, but lots of fun. "It was just a wonderful day. Totally relaxed and everyone just got in and did things. I think more was achieved that Lindsay and Juliet were even expecting." The identity of the person behind the arson and graffiti on the property a week earlier remains unknown.
