Mental Health Foundation staff are pledging to wear pink next Thursday and are calling on all New Zealanders to join them in taking a stand against bullying on Pink Shirt Day. Pink Shirt Day was developed by two Nova Scotian high school students who bought and distributed 50 pink t-shirts after a student was bullied for wearing the colour of the first day of school. It is now celebrated worldwide and encourages people to take a stand and show that bullying is not ok and should not be tolerated. "Research and recent media coverage has shown that bullying is a serious issue within New Zealand and it can greatly affect an individual's wellbeing," says Judi Clements, Chief Executive of the Mental Health Foundation. "By taking part in Pink Shirt Day and writing to Prime Minister Key, we hope that it will serve as a catalyst for many people to work towards a society where all people can flourish and one that values equality and respect."
