Transwoman's death in male prison probed

Mon 4 Apr 2011 In: International News View at NDHA

The New South Wales coroner is investigating the death of a transgender woman who was put in a male prison. Veronnica Baxter was arrested in March 2009, three days after Mardi Gras, for supplying a prohibited drug. Her friends and family say she had dressed and identified herself as a woman for 15 years. Baxter was put in Silverwater jail, an all-male prison in Sydney's west, and found dead in her cell about six days later. ABC reports two-day inquest before Deputy State Coroner Paul MacMahon is expected to start today.
