The New Zealand AIDS Foundation has added its tribute to the many flowing from around the world for the late Dame Elizabeth Taylor, who has died in Los Angeles at the age of 79. NZAF Executive Director Shaun Robinson says Dame Elizabeth showed a depth of understanding of the HIV epidemic that was truly remarkable. “Her strength and compassion were matched only by her determination and tireless work for HIV/AIDS efforts.” The NZAF has a framed letter on the wall which Dame Elizabeth sent the Foundation in 1993. Robinson says many staff stopped to read it this morning as they thought of her. He says there are no more fitting words to describe the actress and campaigner than those in her own letter, which reads: “Please know that although I cannot be with you in the beautiful country of New Zealand, my thoughts and heart are surely there. “As we continue to wage the battle against the virus that has claimed the lives of so many of our best and brightest, it is vital that we stand together to fight the blame and prejudice that so often accompany each new diagnoses… Your gathering [the 1993 AIDS Media Awards] tonight affirms the commitment to life that is every human being's birthright, and your continuing efforts in this fight underscore the strength and compassion of the people of New Zealand. “For your responsibility, your caring, your efforts, and all your hard work, I thank you from the bottom of my heart,” she finishes. “We are very sad at the news of the passing of Dame Elizabeth and our thoughts are with her family and friends at this time,” says Robinson.
