Marriage aps double after law okays gay weddings

Fri 11 Mar 2011 In: International News View at NDHA

Marriage applications have more than doubled in Washington DC since gay and lesbian couples began lining up for licences. As the city celebrated the first anniversary of same-sex weddings this week, a spokeswoman for the DC Superior Court attributed the increase - to 6600 in the past year from 3100 for the previous 12 months - to gay and lesbian marriage. Court records do not identify which partnerships are same-sex, but spokeswoman Leah Gurowitz said that previously, marriage application numbers varied by 100 (or fewer) from year to year. Some applicants came from other states such as Maryland, West Virginia and Delaware.
