A major Australian television network has issued a semi-apology after one of its news anchors described Mardi Gras as "disgusting." Interviewed by Ten Morning News anchor Tom Wilson, Mardi Gras co-chair Peter Urmson described the parade as a celebration of a "colourful community." “With respect," responded Wilson, "there’s a difference between colourful and disgusting in some cases.” “I don’t think I would agree that any of it was disgusting,” replied Urmson The interviewer later pressed his point again before moving on: “Some of it really does cross the line though.” Shortly after the broadcast a spokesperson for the channel said the phrasing Wilson used "might not have been ideal, and TEN apologises if any viewers took offence... However, it is not unreasonable for alternative views to be put to organisers and the interview talent agreed that while he didn’t hold the view, some sections of society may.” Later in the day Wilson himself also apologised, saying he is a supporter of Mardi Gras and gay rights.
