Courtesy of Gordon Copeland, United Future's conservative Catholic zealot, the Marriage (Gender Clarification Bill) is back on Parliament's Order Paper. This is not on. Why is it that the Labour Party refused to back Georgina's transgender anti-discrimination bill, but United Future was allowed to introduce this ridiculous anachronism back into Parliament? It's not as if the LGBT communities have been pushing for same-sex marriage, or even contemplated another Quilter case at the Court of Appeal. revisiting the debate about discriminatory provisions within the Marriage Act 1955. After the passage of the Relationship (Statutory References) Act, we could have rocked the boat by reviving those plaintiff aspirations, but we didn't want to be needlessly provocative, and showed restraint. Apparently, United Future feels no similar sense of reticence, especially not Gordon Copeland, this term's contender for most obnoxious conservative Christian bigot. All right, he asked for it. He can now expect an Official Information Act request for correspondence and financial allocation data related to the failed referendum against prostitution law reform unless he calls off this measure. As for United Future, it should remember that Copeland is only back in Parliament by the narrowest of margins. If Peter Dunne cannot or will not restrain his rabble, the LGBT community will be only too glad to do so for him. Recommended Reading: http://www.norightturn.blogspot.com (and thanks, IS...)
